Self Harm Levels 'High' At Holloway Prison

A surprise inspection of Holloway women's prison has revealed high levels of self harm.

Bullying was rife and more than two incidents of self harm were reported every day according to a report by prisons inspector Anne Owers.

"Our major concern, and that of many of the women we spoke to, was bullying and pilfering on the residential units

"Much of this was low-level, but appeared to be accepted as part of life at Holloway," she said.

Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust said: "Once again prison inspectors have found that our overcrowded prisons are holding many mentally ill women who should not be jailed.

"These women should be in a safe place receiving treatment not locked up in our oldest and biggest women's prison where, despite best efforts by staff, their mental health will deteriorate."

Phil Wheatley, Director General of the National Offender Management Service, said they need to improve women's feelings of safety was recognised and being acted on.

He also said Holloway has now implemented a new violence reduction strategy, produced following consultation with women on safety issues.

The report also found that the prison was improving in "most areas".
