Boris Johnson To Chair First Met Police Authority Meeting

A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority will be held next month, which will be the Mayor of London's first meeting as Chairman of the MPA. He will outline his vision for the MPA's new term of office. Chair of the MPA and Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said: "Crime and safety is the biggest issue for Londoners and my most immediate priority as Mayor of London. It was one of my key manifesto commitments to chair the Metropolitan Police Authority. As Chair of the MPA I will ensure that resources are in place for police operations to be stepped up to tackle crime, but real progress can only be achieved if we all work together - the Metropolitan police, London's communities and all our partners." The meeting will be in the Chamber, City Hall, The Queen's Walk, London SE1 2AA on Monday, 6 October 2008 at 10.00 a.m.

Scottish House Prices Decline In Line With UK

Nationwide Building Society's latest figures show average Scottish house prices are declining at a similar rate to the rest of the UK. In Scotland average house prices fell by 5% between July and September, compared to a 4.6% drop across the UK. However over the last year house prices Scotland’s house prices declined by 7.1% - that's the slowest rate of decline in the UK. Fionnula Early, Nationwide's Chief Economist, said the decline in Scotland is not unexpected. Edinburgh and Aberdeenshire prices are holding up better than most with a decline of only 3% and 2% respectively. Glasgow saw the most notable drop in house prices at 8%.

Cheque Bounce Spree Netted £2m

A 52-year-old woman has admitted defrauding auctioneers and retailers out of an estimated £2m worth of high-value goods by paying with cheques that bounced. Shahra Marsh a British national of Iranian/French origin who lived in London's West End and formerly Canary Wharf obtained jewellery, antiques and high value goods by impersonating a person of extreme wealth and paying for the goods by cheques which would then bounce. Marsh, pleaded guilty to a string of fraud offences and concealment of criminal property yesterday and is due to be sentenced today, 2 October, at Southwark Crown Court. The conviction followed and initial arrest for stealing from Christie's auctioneers in London in October 2006. Marsh is estimated to have amassed over £2 million in fraudulently obtained purchases between 2001 to 2008.

Halifax reports house prices rise
House prices rose by 1.6% in August, the UK’s biggest mortgage lender, has reported. However, the Halifax warned that the rise could be temporary, boosted by the recent interest rates cuts by the Bank of England. The price rise in August followed a modest 0.4% increase in July and was the biggest monthly rise since September 2004.

UK House Prices Decline Further
The price of a typical UK house fell by 0.7% in July, according to Nationwide. Prices were 2.6% lower than one year ago and the typical price of a home was £164,389. Commenting on the figures, Robert Gardner, Nationwide's Chief Economist, said: "UK house prices declined for the fourth time in five months in July, with prices falling by 0.7%.

Record Decline For UK House Prices
UK house prices have fallen at a record rate during the year to the end of September, according to Britain's biggest mortgage lender. The Halifax attributed the fall - which has seen house prices lose 13.2% of their value - as the biggest ever recorded by its house price index. The drop means the annual fall now stands at 12.

House Prices Decline By -1.1%
House prices fell by -1.1% in March according to Halifax. This was the third monthly decline in the past 15 months. The monthly movements, however, can be volatile and the three month-on-three month change is a more reliable indicator of the underlying trend. However, house prices in the latest three months, January to March 2014, were 2.

UK House Prices Rise In May
UK house prices increased by 1.2% in May, according to a report by Nationwide. However, the average price of a house is still 11.3% lower than last year (£154,016), although this marks a significant improvement from the annual decline of 15.0% recorded in April.
