Weston Grand Pier Fire Cause 'Unknown'

An investigation into the cause of a fire which ravaged the Grand Pier at Weston-super-Mare has found the cause of the blaze is "unknown". However, Avon Fire and Rescue Service said the fire was "probably" caused by an electrical fault in the north east corner of the pavilion. The fire service also reported it had first received calls regarding the fire at 6.45am on the morning of Monday, July 28. The fire reduced the pier to a pile of twisted steel in just 90 minutes. The Grand Pier had previously burned down in 1930, and it took three years for the pavilion to be rebuilt.

Schoolboy Dies After Collision

A 14-year-old cyclist has died after the bike he was riding collided with a car in Dundee. Sean Hanton, from Helmsdale Place in Dundee was riding his bike on the busy Kingsway Road at around 6.45pm on Tuesday when it collided with a silver Ford Mondeo vehicle. The boy from the Downfield area of Dundee, who has not been named, was declared dead at the scene.

Police Investigate 'Unexplained' Death

Detectives investigating the death of a man found seriously injured at his home, are treating the incident as “unexplained”. Andrew Moore, 41, was discovered by detectives called to Dorset gardens, Northampton, just after midnight on Monday. He was taken to Northampton General Hospital where he died soon after. Police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Four local men arrested on suspicion of assault have been released on police bail, pending inquiries. Results of the post mortem examination are awaited.

Companies Fined After Man Paralysed

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is urging employers to ensure safe working at height after a man was left paralysed from the waist down following a fall of two storeys at a construction site in central London. T. J. Myles & Co (Contractors) Ltd of Ickenham, Hillingdon, was found guilty of breaching section 2 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. They have been fined £20,000 and ordered to pay costs of £7,339.20 at City of London Magistrates Court. Crispin & Borst Ltd, of Watford, was found guilty of breaching section 3 (1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. They have been fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs of £7,155.20 at City of London Magistrates Court.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

Historic Pier Restoration Campaign A Success
The repair of the historic Hastings Pier is to begin, following a successful community campaign by a local charity. Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has welcomed the move, which will see the pier reopened after being saved from disrepair and abandonment by a local community group. The pier is expected to reopen to the public in 2015.

Appeal After Man Found In Burning Car
Police are appealing for information concerning the death of a man found in a burning car. Officers were called to reports of a car on fire at Mowlem Trading Estate, near to Leeside Road, N17, shortly after 1:00am on 17 December 2008. The London Fire Brigade were in attendance extinguishing the fire when they discovered a person inside.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.
