Couple Die In Newport House Blaze

A man and woman have died following a blaze at their Newport home last night.

The fire broke out in the bungalow in Bishpool Gardens, Ringland, at around 7.05pm.

The woman, thought to be 69, was rescued from the property in Newport, south Wales, by fire crews. However, she was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

A man's body was also found in the home.

A South Wales Fire and Rescue and Rescue Service spokeswoman, said: "On arrival, crews were faced with a fire at a bungalow that was well alight.

"Crews entered the building and rescued an elderly lady, who was given first aid at the scene until the arrival of the paramedics.

"The second person was located in the premises but was confirmed as a fatality at the scene.

"The lady was also confirmed as a fatality upon arrival at hospital."

Gwent Police said the cause of the fire was being investigated but was not believed to be suspicious.

Meanwhile, 19 nursing home residents were evacuated from the Bridge House home, following a fire in a derelict hotel behind the hotel in Eddw Vale, Blaenau Gwent.

All residents are said to be safe and social services are contacting their families.

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike
More than 1,000 firefighters across Merseyside have begun a four-day strike in protest over planned job cuts. Another four-day stoppage is scheduled to begin two hours after the first one ends.

A top fire officer for the West Midlands Fire Service has resigned after he was arrested on suspicion of making indecent images of children. West Midlands Police arrested Frank Sheehan, 55, yesterday at his home in Sutton Coldfield.

Six Kids Left Home Alone Rescued From Fire
Six children have been rescued from a house fire in Manchester, after being left home alone. Police have since arrested the children's mother on suspicion of child neglect. The fire broke out in Oldham last night at around 10pm. The children, aged between eight months and 11 years old had been left on their own.
