Tough Stance On Burglaries By Top Judge
The head of the judiciary in England and Wales has urged courts to hand down stiffer sentences to domestic burglars.
The Lord Chief Justice, Igor Judge, sent out a firm message to criminals today, in a strongly-worded judgment.
Lord Judge rejected calls from six convicted burglars to have their jail terms reduced.
The seriousness of domestic break-ins must be recognised, he said.
Lord Judge said this should be reflected in the prison sentences issued to burglars.
Today's decision now means sentences should consider both the trauma and a victim's loss of sentimental items.
Lord Judge succeeded Lord Phillips to become Lord Chief Justice and Head of Criminal Justice in October 2008.
Prior to his appointment Lord Judge was President of The Queen’s Bench Division.
Earlier this month, Lord Judge suggested young lawyers in the UK are put off becoming High Court judges because of the old-fashioned and 'fustian' view of the role.

Brothers' Sentences Overturned
Two brothers, jailed for causing brain damage to an intruder, have had their sentences overturned at the Court of Appeal. Munir Hussain, 53, was freed, after originally being handed down a 30 months jail term for grievous bodily harm with intent. The businessman hit Walid Salem with a cricket bat on 3 September 2008.

The Leveson report has recommended a tougher form of independent self-regulation in the UK press. Lord Justice Leveson said the press had "wreaked havoc in the lives of innocent people" and called for a regulatory body that was independent of influence from politicians, the media and the government.

Judges in blackmail case face investigation
Two judges involved in a blackmail trial are to face an investigation by the Office for Judicial Complaints. Immigration judges Mohammed Ilyas Khan, 60, and his female colleague - known only as J - will not be allowed to sit while the investigation takes place. The move follows a trial involving Brazilian cleaner Roselane Driza.

Warrington To Host New Hillsborough Inquest
The new inquest into the Hillsborough disaster will be held in Warrington, coroner Lord Justice Goldring has said. The fresh inquest into the deaths of 96 people will begin on March 31, following an order made in December when the High Court quashed the original verdicts of accidental death. Details of the venue are to be announced at a later date.

Hodgson Conviction Quashed After 27 Years
A man who has spent 27 years in prison has had his conviction quashed at the Court of Appeal. Sean Hodgson, now 57, was sentenced to life imprisonment for strangling 22-year-old gas board clerk and part-time barmaid Teresa De Simone in Southampton.
