100,000 Unaware They Have Hep C

Around a third of people don't know how hepatitis C can be passed from person to person, according to new research commissioned by the Department of Health published today. The findings come as a major hepatitis C awareness campaign is launched to reach out to the estimated 100,000 people in England who are unaware they have the infection and stop others getting it. Hepatitis C is a blood-borne virus that can cause chronic infection and lead to serious liver damage and even premature death.

Mikel Charged With Drink-Driving

Chelsea star John Mikel Obi has been charged with drink-driving. The midfielder was arrested at 5.30am on 24 January on Fulham Road in Chelsea, west London. Mikel, who lives in Weybridge, Surrey, has been charged with driving while over the drink-drive limit and will appear in court in April. He is due to appear at West London Magistrates' Court on 3 April.

Body Found In Hampshire Town Centre

Part of a Hampshire town centre has been cordoned off following the discovery of a man's body. The man was found by town centre security guards near the Anvil Theatre Bridge in Basingstoke, at 2.48am. Hampshire police, who are treating the discovery as suspicious, said it was too early to determine cause of death. The eastbound carriageway of Churchill Way from the Victory roundabout remains shut while an investigation continues. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Man Charged Over Glasgow attacks

A 34-year-old man has been charged in connection with two indecent assaults in the west end of Glasgow, police have confirmed. A 57-year-old woman was attacked as she walked in Ascot Court, near Anniesland Cross, at about 10.55pm on 9 January. About 20 minutes later a 25-year-old woman was sexually assaulted as she walked in nearby Crow Road. The man then followed her towards her home. Strathclyde Police said the man who had been arrested appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court on 16 January.

New Chief Executive Of Tribunal Service

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has appointed Kevin Sadler as Chief Executive of the Tribunals Service. The Tribunals Service, an Executive Agency, was created in April 2006, and brought common sponsorship and administration to 22 tribunals formerly managed by 6 separate government departments. The creation of this new Agency was the first major step in radically reforming the tribunals system. The Tribunals Service now consists of 30 jurisdictions, most of which are being brought together into a simplified two tier tribunals system - consisting of a First Tier and Upper Tribunal.

Alam loses FA employment tribunal case
Faria Alam, the former Football Association secretary, has lost a sexual harassment tribunal case against her employer. Ms Alam had alleged that she had been the victim of sexual harassment, unfair dismissal and breach of contract. Durng the tribunal Ms Alam had denied quitting her job at the FA to sell her story to the media.

GMC Establish New Doctor Tribunal Service
Doctors involved in fitness to practise hearings will now be referred to a new Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS), established as part of government-led reforms. The MPTS will take over hearings from the General Medical Council, but will operate separately and impartially, being led by a judicial figure that is accountable to Parliament.

Police Officer Reinstated After Assaulting Woman
A police officer has been reinstated into the force after being found guilty of causing actual bodily harm to a 60-year-old woman. Sgt Mark Andrews was jailed for six months in 2010 after he was caught on CCTV dragging Pamela Somerville across the floor of Melksham police station and throwing her into a cell.

Suspected London bomber to be returned to UK
A British man wanted for questioning in connection with the failed London bomb attacks on July 21 is to be extradited to the UK within 35 days, an Italian court has ruled. Osman Hussein (27) will appeal the decision to the Italian Supreme court, according to his lawyers.
