New Met Commissioner's "Pride"

Sir Paul Stephenson has been appointed the new head of the Metropolitan Police, beating Northern Ireland's chief officer for the high-profile post.

Sir Paul, who has been acting Commissioner since Sir Ian Blair stood down last year, said he was "immensely proud" to be selected for the role.

"I am today an immensely proud policeman, to be entrusted with leadership of the Met and delivering security for the many millions who live in and visit London," he said in a statement this morning.

Sir Paul and PSNI Chief Constable Sir Hugh Order were the final two candidates for the highly sought after job.

Both sat interviews, headed-up by the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith and London Mayor Boris Johnson, earlier this week.

Mr Johnson today extended his congratulations to Sir Paul.

"I'm thrilled that the Home Secretary and I agree that Sir Paul is best man to bring the fresh leadership needed at the Met.

"I have been impressed with way Sir Paul has conducted himself while he has been Acting Commissioner. I know he has the support of the troops and has shown his commitment to Londoners in a big way in his work to make London safer," added the mayor.

Fifty-five-year-old Sir Paul said he would work to secure London's streets, and ensure intolerance of "violence in any form".

"Our job is to be visible on the streets, never walking by when help is needed and having pride in our uniform, our badge and the world famous Scotland Yard brand," said the new Commissioner.
