Tories Increase Opinion Poll Lead

The Labour Party has lost more ground to the Tories in a new opinion poll published today.

Voters' growing support for the Conservatives has helped the party regain more than a 10% lead over the government.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown had enjoyed a narrowing gap between his party and the opposition late last year, but this appears to have suffered a backlash, as the true extent of the economic downturn continues to unravel.

Last week the government officials announced the UK economy had entered a recession.

A YouGov poll published today in the Daily Telegraph reveals that the Tories now have 43% support, compared to Labour's 32%. The Lib Dems have averaged a 16% approval rating.

The Tories' lead jumped by 5%, from 7%, in the last month alone.

Labour and the Conservatives have battled over a 20% swing since the middle of last year, but today's figures show the opposition is again gaining serious political momentum.

The YouGov poll also showed that the Conservatives had a seven point lead over Labour on economic competence.
