Man Jailed For 'Smashing Way Into Shop'

A man, police have described as "very arrogant", has been jailed after smashing his way into a Northern Moor convenience store.

James Samuel Jackson, 32, of Greenbow Road, Newall Green, was sentenced to three years on Monday, after earlier pleading guilty to robbery.

Early on the morning of 25 October 2008 staff at the One Stop shop on Moorcroft Road were beginning their shifts when someone came in and told them a man was acting suspiciously outside.

The man had been seen putting a plastic bag over his face.

One member of staff decided to close and lock the door just in case the man decided to come into the shop.

Minutes later Jackson came to the door of the store with the bag over his face.

The member of staff shouted that the door was locked, but Jackson kicked through one of the glass panels and climbed into the shop, cutting his head on the way.

He forced his way into the shop's office, stealing a significant amount of cash.

Jackson then left the shop, assaulting the female staff who had been guarding the door as he did so.

The whole incident was captured on CCTV, and detectives working locally were able to identify Jackson, who was known to them.

He was arrested later that day.

Forensic analysis of the scene also found spots of blood in the area where the cash was stolen from. DNA testing showed this blood to be Jackson's.

Detective Constable Craig Barry from south Manchester CID said: "James Jackson is a very arrogant man, who has absolutely no respect for other people.

"Despite the fact that the staff at this shop did everything they could to keep him from robbing them, he just smashed his way in anyway, and then strenuously denied the offence in interview, despite us having found his DNA at the scene."
