Capturing China's CO2 To Lower Emissions
China's potential for carbon capture and storage (CCS), an essential technology to achieve low global emissions, will be examined next week at a conference of senior scientific experts from China and the EU. It will be hosted by the British Geological Survey (BGS) in Nottingham on February 10-12 2009. The conference will highlight how British science is supporting China in developing their capabilities to bury CO2 from power stations in rock formations deep below the surface. It is thought that China builds around one coal power station per week and CO2 storage will allow it to maintain energy supplies at the same time as reducing emissions.
Thousands Hit By Power Cut
Households across several parts of Co Durham have been left without electricity after damage to overhead cables. CE Electric users in Wingate, Hutton Henry, Blackhall, Castle Eden, Station Town and Hesledon were affected. A spokeswoman said engineers were working to replace the damaged section, which failed on Tuesday evening. Nursing homes – which were among the 4,500 homes without electricity - in Blackhall and Wingate have been given stand-by generators. The company hopes power will be restored later on Wednesday.
Warning To Fans At Merseyside Derby
Football fans attending the FA Cup 4th round replay between Everton and Liverpool have been urged by police to tone down any offensive chants. Merseyside Police said the behaviour of fans at the two recent derby matches was good. Ch Supt Dave Lewis said: "A handful of arrests were made at the last match and some of those arrested may face football banning orders." He added that the behaviour of a few people should not affect the enjoyment of genuine fans. The game is due to take place at Everton's Goodison Park, with kickoff planned for 2010 GMT.

Study links power lines to childhood leukaemia
Children who live near power lines are more likely to develop leukaemia, a team of scientists has claimed. Researchers from Oxford University found that children who lived within 200 metres of high voltage power lines had a 70% higher chance of developing leukaemia than those children who lived more than 600 metres away from the power cables.
