Weak Pound Boosts Exports, Says Mandelson

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has said the weaker Stirling has given rise to more manufactured exports.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "We have a more competitive currency and that is certainly helping exports from our manufacturing sector,

"I am going to put more effort and resources into taking advantage of that opportunity."

Meanwhile, the National Grid has predicted gas demand will fall by 6% over the next six months, compared to the same period last year.

In a report yesterday, the energy network operator said: "We anticipate continued recession impacts through the summer with demand on average reduced by 1.1 GWs.

"The impact of the recession is anticipated to reduce non daily metered demand. We have assumed this reduction to be 6%, in line with our winter experience."

Summer officially commenced yesterday, and lasts until the end of September.

The official winter starts 1 October and closes at end-March.
