Banned Extremists 'Named And Shamed'

Sixteen people who are banned from entering the UK have been 'named and shamed' by the Home Office, for the first time today.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said she decided to make the names of 16 people banned since October so members of the public are aware coming to Britain "is a privilege" and people could better understand what behaviour the UK will not tolerate.

Among those banned are Islamic extremists, four men who front Neo-Nazi groups, a Sri-Lankan Tamil Tiger leader and a right-wing US radio show host.

Six others who were banned since October are not named on grounds it could reveal the type of information being held about them.

"I think it's important that people understand the sorts of values and sorts of standards that we have here, the fact that it's a privilege to come and the sort of things that mean you won't be welcome in this country," said Ms Smith.

"Coming to this country is a privilege.

"If you can't live by the rules that we live by, the standards and the values that we live by, we should exclude you from this country and, what's more, now we will make public those people that we have excluded.

"We are publishing the names of 16 of those that we have excluded since October. We are telling people who they are and why it is we don't want them in this country."

Those on the banned list are American Baptist pastor, Fred Waldron Phelps Snr, 79 and his daughter Shirley Phelps-Roper - both who picketed the funerals of US soldiers and AIDS victims, celebrating their "punishment" for US tolerance of homosexuality.

Michael Savage, a talk show host whose real name is Michael Weiner, is also excluded as a result of his views on Islam, immigration, autism and rape.

Those banned on grounds of their "unacceptable behaviour" include preachers Abdullah Qadri Al Ahdal, Wadgy Mohamed Ghoneim and Yunis Al Astal. All of them are considered to "foment, justify or glorify terrorist violence".

The others on the list are: Hamas MP Yunis Al-Astal, Jewish extremist Mike Guzovsky, former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard Stephen Donald Black, neo-Nazi Erich Gliebe, Artur Ryno and Pavel Skachevsky, the former leaders of a violent Russian skinhead gang, Muslim activist Abdul Ali Musa (previously Clarence Reams), murderer and Hezbollah terrorist Samir Al Quntar and Kashmiri terror group leader Nasr Javed.
