Policeman Questioned Over Death 'Crash'

A police officer is being questioned over the alleged murder of his partner who was found fatally wounded after a car crash in the Greater Manchester area.

Cheshire police officer Martin Forshaw, 26, was detained following the crash in Bolton, in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police were called to Tottington Road, Harwood, at 2.25am by paramedics who had been alerted after a silver BMW left the road.

The 31-year-old driver, Claire Howarth – a serving officer with Greater Manchester Police – had to be cut free from the driver's seat of her vehicle.

She was taken to Royal Bolton Hospital with severe head injuries and died later.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said an investigation was under way "to establish how the victim sustained her injuries and the possibility she was attacked before the road traffic collision".

According to a post mortem examination, the officer died as a result of a severe trauma.

Her boss, Chief Superintendent John O'Hare said colleagues are "absolutely distraught" at her death.

He added: "She had a real future in the force. She joined because she wanted to make a difference and help people. It's a very sad mood at Rochdale Police station today."

The home which Claire shared with Mr Forshaw has been cordoned off and forensic officers have been at the scene.
