Man 'With Crossbow' Shot Dead By Police

A man has been shot dead by armed police after apparently firing a crossbow from a window of a property in County Durham.

Officers arrived to the house in Cheapside, Shildon, following a series of 999 calls. The victim fired the weapon before police opened fire, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said.

Armed police then surrounded the house, after the officers reported the crossbow being fired.

The IPCC said: "Just after 1.20am, armed officers fired at the man, before entering the house where they discovered the man with injuries."

He was pronounced dead at the scene at around 2.10am.

"Durham constabulary referred the case to the IPCC and initial inquiries are underway," the IPCC added.

Several streets around the house have been cordoned off and motorists have been urged to avoid the area.
