Titanic's Last Survivor Dies

The last survivor of the Titanic disaster died yesterday, aged 97.

Elizabeth Gladys Dean, better known as Millvina, (pictured) couldn't remember the tragedy, as she was only nine weeks old when the sinking occurred.

Titanic's youngest passenger - who was born on 2nd February of 1912 - was travelling with her family to America, where her father was hoping to open a tobacconist's shop. But he died in the shipping accident, so Millvina, her mother and brother returned to Southampton, having been rescued after being placed in one of the lifeboats.

In the last years of her life she had to auction off some of her Titanic-related belongings in order to pay the fees at the care home where she was living. But her friends set up a campaign to help her.

John White, the Managing Director of exhibition company White Star Memories, was the organiser of Millvina Fund. He said she was very supportive of the initiative.

Millvina never watched the famous movie about the sinking of the liner, Titanic, shot in 1998. However, the main actors of the film, Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, along with the film's director, James Cameron, contributed towards the Millvina Fund.

Her death coincided with the anniversary of the Titanic's launch from Belfast, that took place in 1911.
