Danny La Rue Dies, Aged 81

Entertainer Danny La Rue has died at his home in Kent, following a short illness, his spokesperson has confirmed.

The 81-year-old - best known for his legendary female impersonation act - died after suffering from cancer.

His spokeswoman said: "Danny died peacefully in his sleep just before midnight last night after a short illness.

"His beloved companion Annie Galbraith was with him at their home in Kent."

La Rue, who was born Daniel Patrick Carroll in Cork, Ireland, moved to England with his mother when he was nine.

He made his career out of his vaudeville drag act, however he preferred to be called a "comic in a frock".

The entertainer was also known for his impersonations of female celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Margaret Thatcher.

In 2002, Danny was awarded the OBE.

He lived for many years with his partner and manager, Jack Hanson, until Hanson died in Australia from a stroke in 1974.
