Blow For Brown In Council Polls
The Tories have made massive gains in the English local elections, it is emerging.
They have secured the control of at least six councils, with predictions that bigger gains will be made, as the counting continues.
Latest results show the Conservatives took 131 new council seats, compared to Labour's 106 loss, equating to six councils.
Independents can now boast one extra seats, with the Lib Dems losing 25 so far.
The extreme right-wing BNP won its first county council seat in Lancashire.
Conservative councillors have taken control of Devon and Somerset - previously presided by the Lib Dems - and have taken power at the newly created Central Bedfordshire Council.
Meanwhile the Lib Dems have taken overall control of Bristol.

Lib Dems pledge to scrap 'unfair' council tax
The Liberal Democrats have vowed to scrap the "unfair" council tax, on the 15th anniversary of the poll tax riots. The party said that the council tax should be replaced with a local income tax, based on the ability to pay.
