Vindicated Malik's New Ministerial Post

A government minister who stood down after accusations were made regarding his rental agreement has returned to the cabinet.

Shahid Malik was found not to have breached ministerial rules relating to the contracts for his rented home and constituency office.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown today appointed Mr Malik Communities Minister, having previously held a ministerial post in the Justice department.

The Daily Telegraph had raised questions over Mr Malik's rental payments, prompting him to step down until an official review was held.

Mr Malik today said he was "delighted" standards adviser Sir Philip Mawer had proved there were no improprieties.

The MP accused the paper of "lazy" reporting, which has subsequently damaged his reputation.

There was never any suggestion Mr Malik broke Parliamentary rules over expenses.

It was alleged the MP was given a discounted rental rate for his family home, and concerns were raised over the agreement for his constituency office.

Sir Philip found Mr Malik had paid a market rate for both premises and had not broken the ministerial code.

"Naturally, I am very pleased and relieved that the inquiry has cleared me of any wrongdoing," Mr Malik said.

"Sir Philip's clean bill of health will go some way to mending some of the damage to my reputation and heeling some of the hurt caused to friends and family."
