Pensioner Given Suspended Sentence For Assault

A pensioner has today been given a suspended sentence after he assaulted an elderly woman.

Alfred Young, 73, of Ravenhead Close, Ladybarn, admitted one count of Section 20 assault (causing grievous bodily harm) at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square on Monday 18 May 2009.

He was sentenced today, Wednesday 10 June 2009 to six months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months and a three-month curfew monitored by an electronic tag.

Young admitted assaulting an elderly woman in south Manchester after he was identified following a media appeal.

At about 12.15pm on Friday 23 May 2008, Young followed the victim, who was 89 at the time, as she got off the bus on Wilmslow Road, opposite Sainsbury's, Fallowfield.

As soon as they were on the pavement Young began pushing the woman so she raised her walking stick to protect herself.

She was pushed hard enough to cause her to fall over, suffering two fractures to her pelvis.

Young then ran across the road and down the side of Sainsbury's.

The victim spent six weeks in hospital recovering from her injuries.

A caller to Crimestoppers identified Young after CCTV images of him were released as part of a media appeal.

Detective Constable Liz Mitchell of West Didsbury CID said: "The victim did not know her attacker and this was a completely unprovoked attack, which left her recovering in hospital for a long time.

"There was no reason for Young's vicious and callous behaviour as he not only attacked her, he left her on the ground shocked and in pain. Luckily two young women who were on the bus and witnessed the attack had the decency to go and help her.

"I also want to take the opportunity to thank the person who called Crimestoppers, as without their help Young may still be evading justice, instead of having to face the consequences of his disgraceful behaviour."
