Pair Jailed In Landmark Race Hate Case
Two men have been jailed today after becoming the first Britons to be convicted of inciting racial hatred online.
In a landmark case, Simon Sheppard, 51, of Selby in North Yorkshire, received a four year and 10 month sentence, while Stephen Whittle, 42, of Preston, was jailed for two years and four months.
The pair were found guilty of a number of race-hate crimes.
Leeds Crown Court heard Whittle had written offensive articles which were then published on the internet by Sheppard.
The men also printed leaflets containing racist material.
Both Sheppard and Whittle fled to the US after they were convicted of race-hate offences at a trial at Leeds Crown Court last year. They fled to Los Angeles International airport, but failed in their bid to claim political asylum after a US immigration judge threw out their bid.
Sheppard, of Brook Street, Selby, was found guilty of 11 offences.
Whittle, of Avenham Lane, Preston, was found guilty of five offences at last year's trial.
Sheppard was also convicted of a further five charges in January 2009.
The pair were charged with publishing and distributing racially inflammatory material, and possessing racially inflammatory material with a view to distribution.
