Bomb Disposal Officer Killed In Afghanistan Is Named
The British bomb disposal expert killed in Afghanistan by a roadside bomb on Monday has been named as Captain Daniel Shepherd.
Capt Shepherd was serving with the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group when he died following an explosion in Nad-e-Ali district in Helmand Province, Southern Afghanistan.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed the 28-year-old was killed in an explosion as he attended to a roadside improvised explosive device. A second soldier was also injured in the blast.
Paying tribute to the soldier, Lieutenant Colonel Roger Lewis, commanding officer of the group, said: "Captain Dan Shepherd was an extraordinary officer; composed compassionate, utterly charming and imbued with a single-minded determination to put others before himself.
"He was incredibly courageous yet immensely modest about his own stunning achievements. To have the honour to serve alongside him was a humbling experience; he was an inspiration to all."
Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth, added: "The loss of Captain Daniel Shepherd is deeply saddening. He was a highly professional and popular ammunition technical officer who commanded much respect within his unit and amongst his soldiers.
"Captain's Shepherd's death has left a massive void in the lives of his family, friends and colleagues, my deepest thoughts are with them at this time."
The victim was the 18th member of the UK armed forces to die in Afghanistan this month.
A total of 187 British troops have died in the country since operations began in 2001.

Death Fall Teens Named
The two teenage girls who died when they jumped from a bridge in Scotland in an apparent suicide pact were named last night. One was Neve Lafferty who was 15. She jumped to her death with Georgia Rowe, who was 14, off the 100ft Erskine Bridge, near Glasgow.

A former Territorial Army captain has received an indefinite jail term for a string of sex attacks. 41-year-old Brian Witty was convicted last month of three rapes and one sexual assault between 1995 and 2011 in south-west and central London. It is understood he met two victims through a dating website and others in bars.
