MoD's 'About-Turn' On Compo Welcomed
The families of two injured soldiers whose compensation awards were being challenged today welcomed a Government U-turn - but said it should never have tried to slash their sons' payouts in the first place.
Just a day after the Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth announced an urgent review of the compensation system and also promised that two injured soldiers whose compensation was being opposed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) would get their full award.
Wounded Corporal Anthony Duncan's mum, said: "I don't think I have to tell you how I felt when I discovered the MoD was trying to reduce his money.
"The timing of this has been awful when soldiers are still out in Afghanistan. I am glad there has been a change of heart," she said.
The 'about-turn' will also mean that injured Royal Marine Matthew McWilliams, 24, could keep his cash.
Duncan was initially awarded £9,250 after he was shot in the leg in Iraq. McWilliams got £8,250 after fracturing a thigh in a military exercise.
But a tribunal increased Duncan's money to £46,000 and McWilliams's to £28,750 after both men suffered medical complications.
The MoD caused a public outcry on Tuesday when it took the case to the Court of Appeal, claiming their compensation should only cover their initial injuries.
The resulting 'review' of the system therefore has been roundly welcomed.

MoD Introduces Increased Compensation For Injured Personnel
Compensation payments for the most serious injuries have been doubled to a new maximum lump sum of £570,000 today. All injured personnel who have received an award under the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme will receive an increase of between 10 and 100% to their tax-free lump sum payment.

A Ministry of Defence War Office building in Whitehall is to be sold to support "Defence priorities," it has been announced. The Old War Office was built in 1902 for the Imperial General Staff and was a focal point throughout the major conflicts of the 20th century. It housed numerous secretaries of state, including Winston Churchill.

War hero subject of second MoD probe
It has emerged today that Colonel Tim Collins, the British Army commander who won international plaudits for his moving pre-battle speech in Iraq, is the subject of a second MoD probe. The second inquiry surrounds the apparent suicide of an 18-year-old private soldier at Drumaad barracks, Co Armagh in Northern Ireland, two years ago.

Justice Secretary Introduces New Criminal Court Charge
Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has announced new rules that will see convicted criminals in England and Wales pay up to £1,200 towards court costs. The new Criminal Courts Charge will be introduced on 13 April, will begin at £150 and will not be means-tested. Mr Grayling said the new cost will ensure "criminals pay their way".
