Violent Offender Orders Introduced

New Asbo-style civil orders which can restrict the movements of violent criminals' freed from jail have been introduced today in England and Wales.

The Violent Offender Orders (VOOs) place a series of restrictions on dangerous offenders after they leave prison.

This includes banning those subject to the orders from places and events or contacting specified people for between two to five years.

Anyone under an order would also have to tell police if they changed their name or address or travelled abroad.

Breaking the terms of the order carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

Any offender who has served at least a year in prison for offences such as manslaughter, attempted murder or grievous bodily harm is eligible to be placed under a VOO.

Policing Minister David Hanson said that the orders were a "valuable tool" to help protect the public from violent crime and would help "disrupt offending behaviour".
