Prison For Newcastle Rapist
A man has been jailed for five years and seven months after he raped a woman in Newcastle.
Callum Grant Robinson, 23, of Ambridge Way, Kenton, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court for sentence last Wednesday after previously pleading guilty to rape.
It happened in the early hours of Sunday August 17, 2008, when the victim, who was 21 at the time, took a taxi from the Bigg Market area of Newcastle city centre to Fawdon.
When she got out of the taxi she was approached by Robinson, who raped her in a lane behind the flats at the junction of Fawdon Lane and Elm Grove.
Police arrested Robinson after a witness came forward who could put Robinson in the company of the victim prior to the attack. Once arrested, forensic evidence was found to link Robinson to the victim.
Detective Constable Mick Farnsworth, who led the investigation and was in court to hear the sentence passed, said: "I'd like to commend the victim for her courage throughout the court process."
