Mandelson Praises NHS

Peter Mandelson has lauded the work of NHS staff after undergoing surgery on his prostate.

The operation to deal with the Business Secretary's enlarged gland was described as "very successful".

Lord Mandelson stayed over night in hospital after undergoing the procedure At St Mary's in west London on Friday.

Thanking the staff as he left, the Labour peer said he was "very proud to be an NHS patient".

Lord Mandelson, the First Secretary of State, last week stood proxy for Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who is currently on holiday.

Speak to the assembled press outside St Mary's at the weekend, the 'New Labour architect' said: "I have been treated really well....everything is now flowing extremely well. Actually I have had a jolly time."

One in three men in the UK suffer from benign growth of the prostate, however most only suffer mild symptoms, which does not always require surgery.

Problems urinating can be relieved with medication, with more severe conditions treated with medical procedures.
