Stolen Car Crash Kills Women

Two people have died after a stolen car crashed into their vehicle in Bradford. The women, both 48 and from Bradford, were in a Ford Fiesta which was hit by a Mercedes CLK 200 at Apperley Bridge late on Wednesday night. Five people in the Mercedes - two men aged 22, two girls aged 15 and a 19-year-old woman - were injured and were being treated in hospital. The five, who are all from Leeds, have been arrested, a West Yorkshire Police spokesman said.

'L Driver' Dies

A learner driver has been killed in a car crash during a lesson near Melrose, Scottish police have said. Suzanne Harkness, 22, from Galashiels, died after the collision involving her driving school car and a Volkswagen travelling in the opposite direction. The crash happened at about 6pm on Wednesday on the A6091 Melrose bypass. The driving instructor and driver of the other car were being treated in hospital for serious injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatening.

BMA Elect New Scottish Chair

A rural GP, Dr Brian Keighley, has been elected as chairman of the BMA in Scotland. Dr Keighley, who works as a senior GP in Balfron, Stirlingshire, succeeds Aberdeen consultant Peter Terry who held the position for five years. Dr Keighley is a highly regarded GP both by his patients and by doctors across Scotland. He is an experienced medico-politician, having been involved with his Local Medical Committee and the BMA since 1978. He served as Chairman of the Scottish GP Committee from 1995-98 and as Deputy Chairman of the Scottish Council since 2007. At a UK level Dr Keighley has served two terms on the BMA's UK Council and is currently chairing the BMA's General Medical Council Working Party. He is also the Deputy Board Chairman for the BMA's BMJ Publications Ltd.

Pond Tragedy Probed

An 80-year-old woman drowned when she fell into her garden pond, an inquest had heard. It is believed Peggy Gumm from Maesyllyn, near Llandysul, Ceredigion had been cleaning the pond when the tragedy happened on 5 June. A post mortem examination found she had early stages of pneumonia which could have made her unsteady on her feet, the inquest in Aberystwyth was told.

Council Reduces Homelessness Costs

Work to prevent homelessness has saved a local council over £180,000 this year. The housing team at Harrogate Borough Council has managed to save money by reducing the use of bed and breakfast and other third party accommodation for those they have accepted as homeless. Where they have had no choice but to use bed and breakfast, the team has been able to negotiate costs to a lower level. Other services such as the council's temporary accommodation and using housing association properties are continuing to be a success.

Average council tax rise dips to 4%
Average council tax will rise by 4% in England this year, the lowest percentage increase since 1994, the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) has reported. Scottish BMA warns against GP contract delay
The British Medical Association (BMA) has warned of the "potentially devastating repercussions" for general practice in Scotland if there is a delay in implementing legislation for new GP contracts. The BMA have detailed their concerns in a letter to Christine Grahame, the convenor of the Scottish Parliament's Health and Community Care Committee.

Over 5,000 Council Trade Workers Strike Over Pay
Over 5,000 council trade workers are to hold a one-day strike, which could be repeated every two weeks until an agreement is reached in a row over pay. Trade workers such as plasterers and electricians for councils including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Fife are said to be unhappy about being forced to work longer hours than council colleagues.

A campaign aimed at improving the working lives of junior doctors in Wales gets underway today. BMA Cymru Wales has become increasingly concerned about working conditions of junior doctors in general.
