Sporting Events Linked To Domestic Abuse
Police are urging victims of domestic abuse not to suffer in silence.
New analysis shows that police often see an increase in incidents reported around the time of high-profile sporting events and when more alcohol is consumed.
From the start of April to the end of August this year, more than 30,000 incidents have been reported to Greater Manchester Police.
However, police said they are aware that many other incidents go unreported and victims do suffer in silence.
In the UK two women per week are killed by their partner or ex-partner and one in four women and one in six men will suffer domestic abuse at some time in their life.
Greater Manchester Police is highlighting the impact of domestic abuse on families and would encourage victims to come forward, as support and advice is available to get help get them away from the situation.
Police have also asked people to report any concerns for their neighbours, family or friends so they can act on that information.
Detective Chief Inspector Peter Jackson, from the Stockport Division of Greater Manchester Police, said: "We know that a lot of victims suffer in silence but I would like to reassure them that we have a dedicated Domestic Abuse Unit staffed by specially trained officers who work closely with other agencies, including Women’s Aid and Victim Support Service to ensure that victims are fully supported."

New Domestic Violence Campaign Launched
A new campaign has been launched targeting domestic abuse, encouraging victims to not suffer in silence and report incidents. Cumbria Police have launched the 'Do the Right Thing' campaign to address a noted rise in the number of domestic abuse incidents. Police said that in the last four years they have received 2,530 reports of domestic abuse.

Police in England and Wales are to be given guidance on how to spot patterns of domestic abuse and how to pursue prosecutions without relying on victims. The guidance has been issued by the College of Policing as statistics show a woman is, on average, assaulted 35 times before her first call to police.

Met Police have made 264 arrests in London as part of a week-long crackdown on domestic violence. Statistics show one in three women will suffer some form of physical or sexual abuse by their partner.
