Castlerock Golf Club was founded over one hundred years ago in 1901. Ben Sayers expanded the original layout to 18 holes in 1908.
Castlerock is renowned locally for its good greens – all the year round. The best known hole is the fourth, called the Leg o’ Mutton, a 200 yard par-3 with a railway line to the right, a burn on the left and a raised green. The course varies from the norm in that it has five par-5s, nine par-4s and four par-3s, adding up to a par of 73.
Changes to Sayers’ layout were made by Harry Colt in 1925 and in later years, slight improvements were made by Frank Pennick. In 2001 David Jones was asked to re-design the first and eighteenth holes.
