Employer Recognition Awards 2004 launched
The 2004 Employer Recognition Awards, part of the ongoing programme of events to highlight the European Year of People with Disabilities, has been launched at the Island arts Centre in Lisburn.
Featuring a special gala evening celebrating disability in the arts, hosted by UTV personality, Lynda Bryans, the evening included a variety of performances and exhibitions from artists with disabilities from both Northern Ireland and further afield.
Speaking at the gala evening, Mr Dennis Licence, Managing Director of First Trust Bank and President of the Employers’ Forum on Disability (NI) said that the aim of the awards was to encourage all employers and service providers to adapt good practice policies and measures that increase participation of people with disabilities in the workplace and value them as customers.
He said: “These awards are about recognizing and acknowledging those employers in Northern Ireland who are developing innovative practices that focus on inclusion, participation and meet the needs of people with disabilities in the workplace. These awards will raise the profile of those organizations and, importantly, we will be able to share their experiences and best practice with others.”
Dr Gerry Mulligan, Chair of the Northern Ireland Regional Steering Group for the European Year of People with Disabilities said: “The year has done much to raise awareness of disability issues and promote participation throughout Northern Ireland. Much of this has been achieved through partnership-working involving Central and Local Government, the Northern Ireland Equality Commission, representatives of employers and Trades Unions, the disability sector and the European Commission. We must now ensure that we build on the achievements to date and that the legacy of the year is both sustainable and one that improves lives of people with disabilities.”
Commenting on the Employer Recognition Awards Scheme, Dr Mulligan said: This scheme is an example of how we can maintain the momentum of the year in a very practical way by acknowledging those employers doing most to promote greater participation of people with disability in their work force.”
The closing date for entries in the Award Scheme is February 27, 2004.

The PSNI have condemned the assault of four police officers when they were attacked by young people in West Belfast. At around 6:50pm on Saturday, 06 April, police received a report in relation to community concerns that a large group of young people had congregated in Falls Park and that alcohol was being consumed by children.
