Man jailed over dog-fighting
A man who converted part of his home into an illegal dog-fighting venue has been jailed for four months.
Adio Clarke, of Handsworth, Birmingham, had pleaded guilty to keeping 11 pit bull terriers and causing unnecessary suffering to three of them.
He also admitted owning a dog-fighting venue and causing dogs to fight each other.
Birmingham Magistrates Court heard how six pit bulls - which are banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act - were found chained up in the garden of Clarke's home when police raided it last April.
More dogs were found inside. One of the animals had 157 separate injuries. Another dog had suffered a broken pelvis, while another had one ear almost severed.
An animal welfare expert said that the injuries were consistent with those caused by dog fighting.
Nick Sutton, prosecuting, said that Clarke could not take them to a vet for treatment, because they were held illegally, so had to treat them himself, which had contributed to the dogs' suffering.
A homemade video was also found in Clarke's home showing two dogs attacking each other.
At sentencing, District Judge Neil Davison said that only a prison sentence was appropriate due to the seriousness of the offence.

Owners To Face Longer Sentences Over Dog Attacks
Irresponsible dog owners who allow their dog to attack people or assistance dogs will face tougher prison sentences from today, Tuesday. Changes to the Dangerous Dogs Act will also mean dog owners can now face prosecution if their dog attacks a person in their home or on any private property, except if they attack a trespasser.

Two Bailed After Baby Dies In Dog Attack
The 11-month-old baby who died after being mauled by a pet dog at a house in Lancashire has been named as Ava-Jayne Marie Corless. The girl died at Royal Blackburn Hospital a short time after the attack on Monday night. She had been asleep upstairs in a house on Emily Street in Blackburn when she was attacked.
