Murder inquiry launched following south Armagh shooting

The police have begun a murder inquiry folowing the death of a 27-year-old man who was shot in the legs in south Armagh.

A 35-year-old man was also shot and is in hospital in a critical condition. He is being treated for gunshot wounds to his left leg.

It is understood that the attack happened at around 8.45pm in the Carrickastricken-New Road area, just outside the village of Forkhill on December 11.

Both men were taken to the Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry, and then later, transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

It is understood that the men are from the Dublin area.

Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White condemned the shooting as “deplorable” and appealed for assistance from the public.

Follow up searches are being carried out in the area, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) are liasing with Guarda in the investigation of the shooting incident. (CD)

Man Arrested For Headbutting Female Police Officer
A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Newry for assaulting a police officer. While responding to a domestic related report, a local female officer was headbutted to the head, which caused swelling and bruising. The officer was seen by medical staff and her injuries were not more serious and she felt well enough to remain on duty.

BCC Welcomes Conviction Of Belfast Man For Dog Attack
Belfast City Council (BCC) has welcomed the conviction of a man at Belfast Magistrates Court for an offence involving a dog attack on a woman. BCC brought the prosecution against 43-year-old Stuart Grace, of Forthriver Crescent, Belfast, following a report that Mr Grace’s German Shepherd dog had attacked a woman, injuring her arm and back.

22-Year-Old Man Jailed For Rape At Laganside Crown Court
A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to six years for rape at Laganside Crown Court. Ahmad Alsbaihi was sentenced to six years. He will serve three years in custody and three years on licence. He will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register and will be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) for 10 years.

Former City Centre Police Station To Become New 74-Bedroom Hotel
A former police station in Belfast city centre is to be redeveloped for a new 74-bedroom hotel. Belfast City Council's Planning Committee approved the development on Queen Street, along with granting Listed Building Consent to bring the building into use again.
