Post Office Van Driver Hijacked In West Belfast

A post office van driver has been hijacked and threatened with a knife in west Belfast.

The vehicle was stolen in Ross Road on Tuesday which was later found abandoned in the Valleyside Close area.

A security alert was launched and the part of the Springfield Road was closed on Wednesday, however it has since been re-opened.

Sinn Féin MLA for West Belfast Fra McCann condemned the attack..

He said: "The theft of a post office van containing mail for local residents is an attack on the entire community.

"The fact the thieves used a knife to threaten the driver shows the depths these people will go in an attempt to make money.

"The mail they took could contain appointments for hospitals, job offers, financial transactions, birthday or other greeting cards and many personal pieces of information in the letters which have been stolen.

"I would urge anyone who has information on this attack and robbery to pass it onto the PSNI so these people can be stopped attacking our community."
