Businesses and schools urged to adopt solar power

Communities, voluntary groups, public sector organisations and small businesses have been urged to save money and use solar power through a new grant scheme from Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE).

Supported by the Energy Saving Trust and launched through the NIE Smart Programme, 'Plug in the Sun' is a new pilot scheme which encourages the installation of solar panels in a range of properties. The grant scheme in place will see customers funded 75% of the total installation costs.

'Plug in the Sun' is the latest PV scheme from the NIE Smart Programme, working with BP Solar and two local installers, to give organisations and householders the opportunity to install solar panels.

A 3kWp system will generate around 2400 kWh of electricity per year, over half the requirements of a typical house. The grant for homeowners is almost fully subscribed but NIE wants to see more schools, small businesses and community groups signing up.

Sixteen organisations and individuals will benefit from electricity produced from solar power (photovoltaics), and NIE is encouraging schools, not-for-profit and public sector organisations, businesses and community groups to take advantage of this offer.

Jenny Boyd, NIE Energy Services Manager, said that solar power appeals to a broad range of people, both to save money, and to protect the environment by opting for environmentally friendly sources of energy.

"It is hoped that supporting this type of non-polluting energy source will help develop the market and encourage communities across Northern Ireland to invest in sustainable energy solutions," she said.

Noel Williams, Head of Energy Saving Trust in Northern Ireland, acknowledged fears that Northern Ireland's climate would not be consummate for solar power generation – but reassured customers that photovoltaic system is effective even on cloudy days.

"The Energy Saving Trust welcomes NIE’s proactive promotion of renewable energy sources like PV and hopes more people will adopt alternative energy sources in the future,” he added.

This pilot scheme will only be available to existing properties within approximately 40 miles of Belfast and installations must be able to be completed in October 2004.

The scheme is administered by Community Action Renewables and is delivered by BP Solar and local installers SEE and Stothers.
