Arson attacks in County Londonderry

Police in County Londonderry have appealed for information after a number of houses were damaged by arsonists in the early hours of this morning.

Three houses were damaged and telephone lines melted during two separate arson attacks in the Shantallow area.

The first incident happened shortly before midnight last night, when a house and fence in the Drumleck Drive area of the city were damaged when the oil tank was set alight.

In a separate incident, at around 2.45am, the fuel tank at the rear of a property in the Liscloon Drive area was also set on fire. The occupants of the houses managed to escape uninjured.

A spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service, today said that the attacks could have caused "potentially serious injuries" to residents, and added that if it wasn't for the help of fire crews, the fires could have spread and serious injuries and extensive damage.

Anyone with any information in relation to the attacks, should contact police on 0845 600 8000, or anonymously on the Crimestoppers number on 0800 555 111.
