Arrest Follows Shannon Emergency Landing

There are as yet few details about an emergency landing by a trans-Atlantic passenger plane at Shannon Airport this morning.

Gardaí at Shannon airport are investigating the incident which they said occurred on a flight from Amsterdam to Aruba this morning.

The only information so far is that the flight was diverted to Shannon Airport and landed safely at 10.30 am.

The police said that a 44-year-old Dutch national has been arrested under the Air Navigation and Transport Act and is currently detained under Section 4 of Criminal Justice Act at Shannon Garda Station.

Investigations are ongoing but the plane - carrying 224 - passengers was diverted when it requested to land because of difficulties with an unruly passenger.

The pilot of the Arkefly flight made the request and the plane landed safely.

A spokesperson for the airport said the Boeing 767 aircraft would be staying at Shannon "for some time" as Irish police were carrying out a search.

Aruba is in the Dutch Antilles, a holiday island off Venezeula, south of the Carribbean.
