Criminal Trial For Ex-MPs Over Expenses |
|
Three former Labour MPs will face criminal trials having lost their appeals over fiddling their expenses.
The Supreme Court heard David Chaytor, 61, Elliot Morley, 58, and Jim Devine, 57, deny theft by false accounting.
The accused said the investigation into their expenses claims and any penalties they face "should lie within the hands of Parliament" rather than a criminal court.
However, Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, heading the panel of three Court of Appeal judges, ruled they were not protected by Parliamentary privilege.
Chaytor - former Bury North MP, Morley - ex-Scunthorpe MP, and Devine - former MP for Livingston, now face separate trials at London's Southwark Crown Court.
The first trial will take place on November 22.
Nine justices gave their decisions today and will give their reasons for the ruling at a later date.
The former Labour MPs are all on unconditional bail and due to face separate trials.
