Young Entrepreneurs Get Council Backing

A number of young people from Belfast could soon be starting up their own enterprises after taking part in a business programme, funded by Belfast City Council.

The 20 were at the City Hall today for a special awards' ceremony after completing the Enterprise Skills for Youth Programme.

The business programme helped them explore business ideas and find out what it takes to be an entrepreneur. It included tailored workshops, mentoring and visits to businesses.

The participants also travelled to London to visit successful young entrepreneurs in Wandsworth Youth Enterprise Centre.

Congratulating the participants, Alderman Christopher Stalford, Chairman of Belfast City Council's Development Committee, said: "The range and quality of business ideas that have emerged from the Enterprise Skills for Youth Programme have been very impressive.

"This programme has helped reach out to young people across the city and we are delighted to celebrate their achievements at City Hall today.

"I would like to congratulate the participants on their commitment to becoming entrepreneurs and for taking the first steps towards setting up their own enterprises," he said.

Maria Maxwell, one of the participants in the programme, said: "The Enterprise Skills for Youth Programme gave me an insight into operating a business and helped me identify the skills I need.

"It gave me the confidence to know I can do it well and I now look forward to running my own business."

The programme was funded by Belfast City Council and the European Regional Development Fund.
