Orange Order In 'Selfie' Call

The Orange Order has released a statement urging its members to support this weekend's 12 July celebrations by taking selfies and posting them online.

"The Loyal Institution is encouraging brethren, sisters, bandsmen and women, and spectators to take Twelfth 'selfies' using their smartphones, tablets and other electronic devices; and capture the colour, spectacle and unrivalled carnival atmosphere at Orange parades across Northern Ireland," it said.

A 'selfie' is a style of self portrait photography normally produced by holding a camera or smartphone at arm's length and taking a photo of oneself.

A total of 17 demonstrations will take place across Northern Ireland on Saturday and the Orange Order expects tens of thousands of people to take part or spectate.

Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, Edward Stevenson, said: "The Twelfth of July is a day like no other and a unique celebration of our culture, faith and identity. Our parades are colourful and vibrant occasions, with distinctive banners and musical bands providing the perfect backdrop for those wishing to partake in a selfie photograph.

"Using our various social media platforms we will be able to share people’s Twelfth experiences at parades across Northern Ireland and showcase them to an international audience."

He added: "I hope the many images will collectively portray their own story and act as a lasting memory of another glorious Twelfth of July."
