Police officers to retain special duty allowance |
|
Police officers in the province are to keep their special duty allowance, following a review carried out by the Northern Ireland Office.
The special duty allowance, which currently amounts to almost £3,000 per year, is paid to every police officer under the circumstance of “special threat”.
It was speculated that the payment would be scrapped, but under the new terms of the review, the amount will be reduced, but the payment will be retained.
Terry Spence, General Secretary of the Police Federation, welcomed the move. "There is still an ongoing terrorist threat in Northern Ireland, and our officers are still subjected to attack," he stated.
