NI News In Brief

It's A Sign!

Hardy Irish naturists should feel better this week with news of a call to erect signage at a local nudist beach. A Leitrim member of the Irish Naturist Association has long been calling on the area's county councils in the North West to provide signs on beaches that are used for nude sunbathing. Now, it's understood the nudist beaches throughout the North West region - with Trawalua beach near Cliffoney being recently voted a number one nudist beach - despite the prevailing temperatures - are to get the warning signs. However, a spokesperson for the Irish Naturist Association (INA), Pat Gallagher, who currently resides in Leitrim said: "Many of the councils have told the INA that they do not have the power to erect signage to alert the public that nude sunbathers may be on the beach." According to airline, easyjet's website, people "must come to Trawalua Beach, Co Sligo, for the (craic)". It relates that only brave bodies withstand the full Atlantic breeze, but the extensive dunes offer shelter and a secluded haven for those determined souls.

Shoukri Caged

North Belfast loyalist Ihab Shoukri has been jailed for 15 months for his role in a UDA show of strength at a bar. Shoukri, 34, from Westland Drive, admitted being a member of the UDA and supporting the loyalist paramilitary organisation. Gary McKenzie, 36, from Clare Heights, Belfast, was also jailed for 15 months on the same charges. The judge told Belfast Crown Court the peace process had saved the men from lengthy jail sentences.

Derry Shooting

A man was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to his thigh after an attack in Lislane Drive in Creggan, Londonderry, last night. Gunmen broke down the door of the victim's 70-year-old grandmother's house and fired a shot in the hallway, wounding their target, who is aged 25.

Road Up!

A £150,000 resurfacing scheme will start next week on the A7 Saintfield Road, Carryduff. Works to strengthen the carriageway and improve the road's skidding resistance will begin on Saturday 14 June 2008. The work will take place over a 300 metre stretch of the Saintfield Road, either side of Comber Road and Church Road junction, and the work is scheduled over two consecutive weekends. During the work, for safety reasons, the approach roads to this junction will require to be closed and alternative route signing will be in place to assist the travelling public. The main diversion routes will be via Ballygowan or The Temple.

No Buses - Then 50 Come Along At Once

A Co Antrim bus builder has secured an €11m deal to construct 50 new vehicles for Dublin Bus. Wrightbus in Ballymena is to start delivering the buses from November this year through to March 2009. The contract is part of a fleet replacement programme aimed at ensuring that the average age of the Dublin Bus fleet is no more than six years. Dublin Bus carries over 150 million passengers annually and on average 500,000 each day across its network. These are the first vehicles Dublin Bus has ordered from Wrightbus since 2001 and the first double-deckers that the company has ever purchased from them.
