Chip Shop Blaze Destroys Family Business

A Co Londonderry politician has described the damage caused by a fire in his constituency this morning as "saddening".

On the day that Ulster Unionist MLA Billy Armstrong opened his new constituency office in Moneymore - two doors from the blaze - he has spoken of his feelings after the neighbouring premises of the famous Golden Chip take-away were gutted.

"I was saddened to see the extent of the damage caused to The Golden Chip this morning.

"The local business is part of the same row of listed buildings as my new constituency office and has existed in Moneymore since 1864.

"The Golden Chip itself has been a family run business in the heart of Moneymore since 1971 and has thrived and served the local community greatly in recent years," he said.

The MLA also paid tribute to the fire and emergency services on "their quick response and the efficient way in which they carried out their duties".

"Hopefully the shop owners, the Chambers family can begin work as soon as possible to see the very popular fish and chip shop and business restored to its former glory," he said.

An aerial ladder and four fire appliances were used to tackle the fire.

The fire crews initially evacuated two elderly people from an adjoining house.

In all some 20 firefighters were needed to deal with the outbreak on Main Street, which has gutted the shop.
