Man Injured In Central London Building Collapse

A man is being treated for head and hip injuries following the collapse of a building in central London.

The building, on Portugal Street, Holborn, is understood the be undergoing floor-by-floor demolition when part of floors five to two collapsed at about 16:15 on Monday.

Reports suggests that the man injured in the collapse may have been a crane operator.

It is understood that up to 200 people were evacuated from the surrounding area, including London School of Economics.

London Fire Brigade Station Manager John Snelgrove who was at the scene said: "When the first crews arrived they found the building, which was under refurbishment, had collapsed between the fifth and second floors.

"Firefighters gave first aid to an injured man on site until ambulance crews arrived and also helped police put safety cordons in place and to evacuate people from the immediate area."

'Loud blast' heard in London building collapse
A building housing the campaign offices of Labour deputy leadership contender Hazel Blears has partially collapsed in Victoria in central London. Emergency services were called to the Queen's Gate Building in Dean Farrar Street in Westminister around 4pm on Tuesday. The building is located near Scotland Yard.

Man Jailed For Attempted Murder Of Pc
A south London man has been jailed for 25 years for tying to shoot a policeman. Michael Mitchell, 32, of Babington Road, Streatham, was convicted of attempting to murder Pc Shaun Callow, possession of a firearm and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

'Skull Cracker' Charged Over Armed Robbery
Michael Wheatley, also known as the 'Skull Craker', has appeared at East Surrey Magistrates Court today accused of armed robbery, The 55-year-old, who was on the run from an open prison in Kent, was arrested in London following an armed raid on the Chelsea Building Society in Sunbury, Surrey, on Wednesday.

'Hybrid' Human-Beast Embroy Research Approved
The British fertility regulator has given the go-ahead for the creation of what has been dubbed hybrid human-animal embryos. Experts from King's College London and Newcastle University will now be able to carry out research using the embryos, which they hope will pave the way for new treatments for a range of diseases.
