SCO wriggles free with alternative website
The company at the receiving end of a major attack from what experts consider to be one of the most rampant computer viruses to date have been forced to close down their website due to the cyber-onslaught.
UNIX operating system solutions company SCO Group announced today that they have put in place an alternative company website following a denial of service attack from the Mydoom / Novarg internet virus.
The company has asked customers, resellers, developers, shareholders and all other website visitors to use http://www.thescogroup.com as the destination for the company's website through to the end of February 12 2004.
"Security experts are calling Mydoom the largest virus attack ever to hit the Internet, costing businesses and computer users around the world in excess of $1 billion in lost productivity and damage," said Darl McBride, president and CEO of the SCO Group.
"Because one of its purposes is to interrupt access to the www.sco.com website, we are taking steps to help our important stakeholders continue to access the information, data and support that they need from this website."
The alternative website provides visitors with links to security vendors, including Network Associates and Symantec, that will provide them with all of the latest information on how to download software updates and protect their Windows PCs against the Mydoom virus.
SCO announced that it is working with US law enforcement authorities in an attempt to determine the identity of the perpetrators of the Mydoom virus.
The company also announced that it has offered a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of creator of the virus.
SCO said it expects the attacks on the website to continue until February 12 when the MyDoom-A variant should stop spreading or targeting the original SCO site.
The MyDoom-B variant is programmed to launch attacks on not only SCO.com but also Microsoft.com.

Vans to carry posters of missing children
Posters of missing children are to be carried on hundreds of vans across the UK as part of a new campaign. More than 450 vans are to be used to display the posters, which will feature children on the police-run Missing Kids website. The first picture to be used on the posters is that of 15-year-old Sasha McLeish, who vanished in Luton on June 23.

BAA Drops Name To Use Individual Airport Branding
Airport operator BAA has announced that it will change the name under which it operates its UK airports, opting instead to use the individual airport names. The company currently runs Heathrow, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Southampton and Stansted, which it now says will operate solely under their own stand-alone brands.

A businessman has been awarded damages after his personal details were disclosed on social networking website Facebook. Matthew Firsht was awarded £22,000 in damages against former school friend, Grant Raphael, who created the profile. The profile was on Facebook for 16 days before it was taken down.
