Better facilities promised for Travellers sites

Gypsy and Traveller sites will be refurbished this year through a new £8 million fund which will help councils around England meet the costs of modernising facilities.

The money will allow councils to upgrade facilities like water and electricity supply and to provide bigger pitches to help towards creating new transit and stopping places for larger groups, the government announced today.

Under the government's Gypsy Sites Refurbishment Grant, around three quarters of costs will be met by Whitehall, and local authorities will be expected to cover the remainder.

The funding has been split into two rounds. Twenty-eight councils have so far had their bids approved, and will share £4.8 million. A second round will be held later in the year.

Housing Minister Yvette Cooper said it is important that sites met "proper standards".

She added: "Good quality sites provide important support for Gypsy and Traveller communities and help them live in harmony with neighbouring settled communities."
