About Brian Morrison Photographic

It all started for me during a trip to Kenya as a student. I was mesmerised by the place, the light, the colours, the people and the atmosphere. I had borrowed a friends Yashica SLR and went about starting my love affair with photography. At that point in my life I was an art student at Camberwell Art College. I had gone there with the dream of becoming an illustrator but this pivot would take me away from paint brushes and easels to the world of the camera and lens.

Photography felt like a natural fit for me, like trying on a jacket that just felt right. I finished my degree having spent the last year photographing the Newbury bypass protests, documenting the world of the protesters, how they lived and lengths they went to in trying to stop an ancient woodland being cut down in order for a new road to be built.

After College I had the opportunity to work for the Belfast Telegraph and a local news agency in Belfast. This was like an apprenticeship for the commercial world in which I would end up working. This was an invaluable experience, I learned the craft of creating an image that would tell the story and work for an editorial format. This was a massive learning curve, a sink or swim stage in my career where I quickly learned what worked well for editorial while developing my own brand of photography as well.

My core value as a photographer is to try and portray people in a positive light. I was inspired by renowned photographer, Sebastio Salgado. He gave people who had nothing more than the dirt on their feet a sense of dignity, grace and biblical stature. This is how I wanted to capture the world around me and this is how I go about telling the stories of the people I work with.

I have been blessed in my career to work for organisations such as Tourism Ireland, The National Lottery Fund, and The Red Cross alongside many other commercial businesses and agencies. I love image creation and I am always looking to evolve and progress in my work.

Business and Industry
My approach to business photography is to always capture a sense of pride in people’s work. When I take a business portrait I like to show that the business means something to the subject. I try to suggest a sense of pride and satisfaction in the portrait and illustrate the business in the best possible way. I like to show people relaxed and happy in their environment, and with their colleagues and clients.
While I’m working, I try to create an atmosphere which is relaxed and calm, as this will encourage these type of portraits. As one of my favourite photographers, Sebastio Salgado puts it, “It’s not the photographer who makes the picture, but the person being photographed.”

Environment | Architecture and Landscapes
I have been fortunate enough to travel across Ireland in my work as an architecture and landscape photographer working for Tourism Ireland, Failte Ireland, Discover NI and other tourism bodies. I love the challenge of landscape and architectural photography. It can take patience, waiting for mother nature reveal the best light on a scene to capture a fleeting moment that encapsulates the essence of a place and time.

Feature | News and Features
I love feature led photography, as it is all about capturing the essence of an experience at its peak. I love the challenge of observing a scene and trying to capture the ultimate moment that best illustrates what is going on. This work has taken me to many interesting places, working for a variety of clients, from the likes of Tourism Ireland, Failte Ireland to arts based organisations. My work has featured in magazines and newspapers around the world, from the Washington Post and New York Times, to the Guardian.

Portraits
To capture strong portrait photography, trust must be established between the subject and the photographer. My approach is to try and put people at their ease. I like to be calm and relaxed while I’m working with people. I like to hear their stories and get an understanding of them before the shutter is pressed. Portraiture for me, is a shared experience. I tell them a little bit about my life, they tell a little bit of their life to me. This provides the basis for a portrait.
