About Disability Action

1 in 5 people in Northern Ireland have a disability.

Disability Action are a Northern Ireland charity who work with people with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, sensory disabilities, hidden disabilities and mental health disabilities.

Our Vision
A society which is inclusive, adapts to meet the needs of people with disabilities, rather than one that expects them to fit in. A society that recognises disabled people's right to be different and to live their life in a way which meets their particular needs without prejudice.

Advice
Disability Action provides an Advice Service through our Belfast, Dungannon and Carrickfergus Offices. We have three advisors and appointments can be limited due to the demand on the service. You can contact your closest office for availability. Please note that not all offices are staffed at all times.

If you are seeking advice in relation to changes to social security benefits such as Personal Independence Payment, Universal Credit or Employment and Support Allowance then please contact the Welfare Changes Freephone Helpline.

This service provided by Citizens Advice (CAB), Advice NI and Law Centre NI can offer free and independent advice on DLA, Personal Independence Payment, Employment Support Allowance, Housing Benefit and Universal Credit.

Advocacy
Overview of what advocacy is...
  • Advocacy helps you understand your rights.
  • Advocacy helps you explore the options available to you.
  • Advocacy can't and won't tell you what to do, it's your choice.
  • Advocacy will support you once you make your decision to have your choices listened to.
Our Advocacy Service is currently only available to people living in certain areas, or with certain disabilities. Please see the options below. You can also find out about our Employment Advocacy service on this page.

Driving
Being able to drive gives you the independence to go where you want, when you want. Let us help you get in the driving seat! Disability Action can help you in all aspects of driving – from practical and theory lessons to assessment and information and advice.

Help with Training
Are you between 16 and 22 and are looking for support in education and training to achieve your goals? Our team can help, advise and assist you to participate in training as well as gain valuable work experience. We work closely with all colleges, training organisations and the Careers Service across Northern Ireland to support over 600 trainees on the Training for Success programme.

Disability Action Transport Scheme
Here at Disability Action we recognise the various problems getting out and about when using public transport. That is why we offer Disability Action Transport Scheme or DATS for short. All of our vehicles are fully accessible and will allow you to travel within your local town. One of our fully trained friendly drivers will collect you at home and bring you wherever you need to go within your travel zone – it can be for going to work, shopping, visiting friends and attending health related appointments – it is up to you.

Work
Here at Disability Action we have a number of projects that help people with disabilities find employment and support them in their place of work. We also provide advice and support for employers considering employing somebody with a disability or need advice to support an existing disabled employee.

Membership
Disability Action has always been a membership organisation. Membership is open to organisations and includes small disability groups to larger disability organisations. We have around 100 member groups. Our aim is to have a strong and diverse membership that will help us to inform policy and strategy that address the issues that people with disabilities in Northern Ireland face.

Directors are nominated by our membership and member organisations have voting rights at Disability Action’s Annual General Meetings. Membership is only open to organisations. To find out more about how to become a member please contact Patrick Malone by email or phone 028 9029 7880.

the work that each member of this group is so inspirational and outstanding, for me personally i do not think that people who work in this field of work do not get enough recognition for all their dedication hard work and achievements, the level of work and high standards of care that this organisation achieves is so inspirational to me and i hope that one day i can get recognised for making ahuge impact on disabled peoples lives the way that this organisation does.
