Shopping Mall Explosion Injures One

An explosion at a shopping mall has injured at least one person in Exeter.

Police have told South Devon shoppers and motorists to steer clear of Princesshay Shopping Mall as an investigation gets underway.

Emergency services are at the scene and nearby premises have been evacuated.

Assistant Chief Constable Bob Spencer said: "We are carrying out a careful evacuation of the premises using the police and other emergency services that are at the scene.

"We will update what has happened as soon as we can.

"In the meantime I would urge motorists to stay away from the city centre area and road delays are likely."

It is reported that the incident happened when a man walked into the Giraffe restaurant at around 1pm today, although the cause or seriousness of the blast cannot yet be confirmed.

However, it is understood that the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital it not expecting a significant number of casualties.

Royal Navy bomb disposal teams, including a specialised vehicle, arrived on the scene shortly after the blast.

Juliette Joffe, one of the restaurant chain’s directors, confirmed that there had been a blast.

"All we know at present is there was an explosion in the Giraffe in Princesshay and the Princesshay has been evacuated.

"Nobody in the restaurant has been injured apart from the person who set it off."

Police Search Flat After Restaurant Blast
Police are searching a flat in connection with an explosion at an Exeter shopping mall yesterday. A 22-year-old man, named as Nicky Reilly was detained at Devon and Cornwall Police station after a device detonated at the Giraffe restaurant. The incident happened at around 1pm yesterday when a man walked into the family eatery.
