Arctic Blast Heads For The UK
Forecasters at the Met Office are predicting bitterly cold northerly winds this week, with the risk of widespread icy conditions and heavy snow bringing the potential for travel disruption.
A band of rain, sleet and snow will push south across the country tomorrow (Thursday) followed by a marked drop in temperatures. As the rain and snow clears, it could leave roads very icy for morning and evening rush hours across the UK.
Met Office Chief Forecaster, Richard Young said: "Following the rain and snow on Thursday, skies are expected to clear rapidly with widespread ice likely to form quickly. This could lead to disruption to travel networks, potentially through the morning rush-hour in Scotland and Northern Ireland. England and Wales could then see widespread ice during the evening rush hour."
Of particular risk will be the speed with which roads will freeze. With little time for agencies to treat surfaces between the rain or snow stopping and temperatures dropping there is the potential for ice to develop across the UK road network.
Snow showers are then likely to spread across many places exposed to the northerly wind, especially northern and western parts of the UK later on Thursday and through Friday.
The public are advised take measures to ensure that they are prepared for the potential of severe weather.

Cold weather set to continue
The current cold spell gripping the UK is set to continue, the Met Office has warned, with more snow showers expected across England and Wales today. South East England could see accumulations of snow of between 3 to 7cm, due to persistent snow showers, the Met Office warned.

Temperatures At -10 As Cold Takes Hold
This weekend will see a marked change in the weather as the dry spell makes way for snow and ice in many parts, according to the Met Office. A spokesman for the meteorological service said that over the past few days the UK has seen the coldest spell of winter so far, as very cold air has flooded across the UK from the continent.

Ice And Snow Disrupt The UK
A band of rain, sleet and snow is set to spread from the northwest giving further accumulations of snow to eastern parts of the UK. The East Midlands, northern England and eastern Scotland look to be particularly affected with 10 to 15 cm possible on hills.

Large parts of the UK have been affected by snow and ice as the current cold weather snap continues. The Met Office has issued warnings of heavy snow for northern Scotland, Wales and east England, while there are warnings of widespread icy conditions across Northern Ireland, west Wales and south-west England.
