Police Question Students' Murder Suspect

Police in London are currently quizzing a 33-year-old man in connection with the gruesome murders of two French students, last week.

Interviewing began after the suspect was released from hospital, where he was being treated for burn injuries.

The remains of Gabriel Ferez and Laurent Bonomo, both 23, were found in the men's charred southeast London rented bedsit.

Both had sustained multiple stab wounds and their bodies were burnt after the attack, which is believed to have taken place on 29 June.

Forensic teams have said the men's bodies were stabbed around 240 times - before and after death - and their corpses and flat subsequently set alight.

Detectives believe their bank cards and two Sony PSP games consoles were also taken on the day the pair were killed.

Both students were working towards the third year of a biochemistry masters degree, at Polytech Clermont-Ferrand in central France and were in London on a research project, and had been based at Imperial College.

They were expected to return home soon.

Earlier this week, a "silent march" was held by staff and students at the French Institute, as mark of respect for the two men.

The police released a 21 year-old, arrested in connection with the investigation, without charge on Saturday.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the appeal for witnesses and information "remained active".

"We would reiterate that we do not know how many suspects may be involved and no-one is charged with this offence," he said.
