Policing Money At Risk
The man touted as Northern Ireland's future Justice Minister has warned delays over devolution could jeopardise the current funding package.
Alliance Leader David Ford (pictured) said the £1bn agreed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown and the First and Deputy First Ministers could be lost if judiciary and policing powers are not transferred to Stormont before the next general election.
Mr Ford told BBC Radio Ulster the current financial outlay "may be the best deal we are going to get".
He is regarded as the front runner to head up the eventual department.
"We do have to look back two and a half years at the complete failure of Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams to get any package out of the Treasury for devolution in general," Mr Ford told the Inside Politics programme.
"I don't think there is a specific time scale but I think we can take it that if it has not come into play before the general election next May, then it probably isn't available any longer.
"Certainly the secretary of state seems to believe that it would not be available to him if direct rule is to continue."
